I'm using Crystal v8, exporting to a "Excel" file, but I'm doing it via an export to .rtf first, as that produces a more consistent result. Is there a "real solution"? - sadly, I think this is one of the most inconsistent areas of Crystal Reports, and I have found the best solution will vary with the report structure and content.
Good luck... Malcolm
