Export survey to spreadsheet

I am trying to export a survey from WSS to Excel 2002. I have noticed when exporting this information it only exports 512 charectors instead of the whole thing. In other words it is cutting off the response from a single person after 512 charectors. It seems to export just fine to Excel 2003. Any ideas why it doesn't work with Excel 2002?
