Hi guys,

I setup windows 2003 with DNS and active dir, it's working fine now. it has whole of user and password in there. I'm planning to move to new server with better hardware, but don't want to redo it again like add users and passwords to AD..etc. Is there any way that I can export all the settings from current computer and then import it in new machine ? Thanks.

When you bring in your new server, you'll simply dcpromo it in as a DC, and the AD components will sync between the two. You'll have to establish DNS, DHCP, etc. on the new server as required.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

If you are going to be demoting the old DC you'll also need to transfer the 5 FSMO roles across to the new box amongst other things.

sorry, it's been long time here since i setup AD, what does DC mean here ? thanks

DC - Domain Controller. Why not keep the old DC as well - have two. This way, if one goes down, you don't lose your entire directory.

Very true LW.

However cisco... if you keep the old DC and don't transfer any of the roles read up on using NTDSUTIL to seize them to the new DC in the event that the old one fails.

If you do keep it then add the 2nd DC as a secondary DNS entry for the clients and take a note of the DHCP scope settings. You don't necessarily have to setup DHCP on the 2nd DC if you have a longish lease time just know what the settings are so you can do it if needs be.

Thanks for all the outputs, I will do it later today.
