Export Movie --> turns out blank!

When I create a simple flash movie with text and then do EXPORT MOVIE, it turns out great. however, when I add a relatively large picture (converted into a symbol) then do the same thing, the movie turns out completely blank, and not even the correct dimensions - but much larger. Then, if i delete the picture, it works fine again with just the text. Any ideas? thanks
