I have tried the Crystal route and also would like a copy of the report. I am SQL based.

Thanks

I tried to write this report myself, and Macola could not tell me how to do it. I don't think even they know, otherwise it would already exist.

I've attempted this before and I always give up. It seems like such a complicated scheme for such a simple function.

Did you look at the system manager\reports\lists2\userlist? It is only cobol, not crystal, but seems to give all the menu selections & access for all the users.

I tried this for one user and this was the response:
** See Group Name For Valid Menu Selections **
and that's all it printed. I think I have tried this in the past and it produced a huge report that was so difficult to read it was totally useless and was recycled. Since then we converted to SQL and I haven't tried it again until now.
Crystal would be so much better. I am not a SQL person and perhaps the permissions would prevent it, but couldn't a report be written directly out of the SQL database?

polarbear,

Have a look at the database Screens, table SYSPASS_SQL. If you can make heads or tails out of that table, please let me know.

The flags that *seem* to indicate if someone has access to a given nemu selection or not do not even change when the option is changed in Visual Menu Builder.

This is the table where Exact themselves told me they do not know how to write a crystal report against it to provide this information.

The syspass_sql file will always show that the user has access to everything. When you take the right away from a user, it writes a record into the syscomp_sql table.

I've also tried to use those two tables to write a report. I don't think Crystal alone would do it. One thought is to use various SQL views to help it along.

Another approach is to print the standard Macola report and then import/parse that into something like Access and write a report off the imported data.

I just wrote a crystal report on the pervasive 7.6.100a & I can select any of the fields from the syspass_sql file & report back. Haven't tried on an sql db as yet, but I think the info must be there. I did find that if you remove a module from a user using the user/module maintenance that it doesn't show removed modules flagged as N, they just simply don't appear for that user. Modules they have access to appear as Y in menu_on_off_sw1. If this helps, continue the discussion & I will email anyone the report I started so you can modify as you please with your own dsn. It seems like if it works in pervasive, it should work in sql since it is supposed to be a superior db manager.

Hello all,

I am very busy right now, but I took a break a couple of days ago and developed a SQL View that seems to get the information required to run a report. I will attempt to builds some basic reporting around this over the weekend to demonstrate and test the effectiveness of the view. The returned result should have all the information that would be required to show user menu structure and the user's rights to companies, modules, and individual menu items. The only thing left to do is verify that the linkages for the menu heirarchy are all working correctly.

Hello all,

I was unable to get to this over the weekend. I will take a look at this later this week. If anyone has any ideas on how they would like to see these reports, please let me know.

For starters, I was thinking of a heirarchial Crystal report that shows the data much as it is on the Progression menus. I was also thinking of utilizings Excel to get clear and concise views of what users have access to what features, differences in menu structures, and possibly even a right back feature for user security.

Please post any ideas. I should let you all know that this will be one of my few for fee contributions. However, I think that this can be great money making opportunity for all of you as well. Special pricing considerations will be given to anyone that can provide help and guidance in producing a robust and useful product.

Thanks to All,

Hello,

Travis:

I think the report would be vrey useful if this ask for the group field first. For example: By Module and all it users; Or by User and all it options; By option and all it users.
That would be great as I said, but the most standard format would be the natural heirarchial order like progression shows it, as you said too. This will open some ideas to make it by companies.

Since Crystal reports can be exported to Excel, it will be the first choice.

These are my thoughs. Now, I'm still using Betreive 6.x. Can I use it ?

Thanks.

The odbc drivers for btrieve 6x are hideous. You are talking about the difference between a 20 second report in 2000i & a 20 minute report in v6x.

Buy the merant driver, $99/seat for those who write reports & compile the report for your crystal non-designer users & you still can run btrieve 6x till your server dies. You will wish, however, that you'd done something w/software & databases if you are in that unfortunate circumstance.

I haven't found any remarkable differences between the merant & p2000i drivers, though I have heard that people have trouble. Maybe there are report generation techniques that affect performance. Upgrading one client from pervasive 7 to mssql reduced report run times from 45+ minutes to less than 2, so it is noticeable.
