is there a way to export to a text file (or other) a list of all the folders that exist in outlook express? Our users have sometimes hundreds of folders and some of them want to export a list of all their folders. Or if anybody knows of a script that would do this, that'd be cool too.

What do they want to do with the list, just view it?

yeah, basically anything that can output it to a file, even just a text file, or csv

How about a batch file that does this...

Say your e-mail is in c:\mail (I know, it won't be, but you can go tools>options>maintenance>store folder and change the location if you like).

dir c:\mail > c:\output.txt

This would create a file in the root of c: that would be a txt file they could view the results.

You could also direct the output to c:\windows\desktop, or if they are 2000/xp, direct to c:\documents and settings... blah blah blah, to make it easier to find.

but this would include extra files, such as folders.dbx, pop3uid.dbx and also, if they created a folder and then deleted it, the *.dbx file doesn't get deleted (as far as I can tell). I do appreciate your response and effort, and I think you're on the right lines, but is there some way that I could read the folders.dbx file instead?

I thought the dbx file would disappear if you deleted it, but you might have to compact the folders after you delete it, to go away from the windows file system.

What is the problem with the "extra" files being there? Perhaps if you could tell me what they are looking to gain from this?

I guess the extra files being there wouldn't be a huge problem, but after i spoke to the user, it turned out your way wouldn't work - because they have subfolders within subfolers within folders - and they want the tree hierarchy also. They needed it for today so in the end they just used print screen to take a screen print of outlook express. thanks for your assistance all the same

I was going to suggest that, but I didn't know if all their folders would be contained within a single screen, or if they would have to scroll down.

no, they wern't all contained within one screen, they had to take four screen shots as far as I know, but they seemed to be happy enough with that.
