Export Existing Folders CR XI R1???

Here's my dilemma. Tonight I am upgrading my production CR XI server from R1 to R2. I had always planned on exporting all my existing reports and folders, uninstalling R1, installing R2 and then importing my folders and reports.

I did this, sort of, on my test server. Except I skipped the export step and after installing R2 simply used the migration tool to migrate my folders/reports from my prod server.

So...it never dawned on me that there is no EXPORT option. So now here I am, pressed for time, trying to determine what to do.

Any suggestions?

Never mind....I threw up a VM and installed XI R 2 there..migrated the prod server I am about to upgrade.

An export function would be nice though...eh?

Hi,
What exactly would you export to?
The folders are not 'real', like directory folders in the OS, they are representations of data stored in the CMS and are there to aid users/admins to organize things in a conventional and visible manner ( mainly)..

Published reports can be 'imported' by reusing/migrating the existing CMS database ( this will recreate your folder structure), creating new input and output servers in the new installation, and 'pointing' the input/output servers to the location of your existing published stuff...

Since the reports start as flat files (or can be saved as flat files) why couldn't the folder structure be exported as just that...a Windows folder and files within that folder?

There are numerous ways this could be handlded. I think it'd be handy.

The folder structure that the physical .rpt files are stored in by the CMS has absolutely no relationship to the folders they appear in in Infoview.

You can back up the CMS database (which contains pointers to the files) and the physical file store (folder on the hard drive that contains the .rpt files) and then restore them. Or you could back up the physical file store, uninstall Crystal Server, and install the new version - pointing it to the existing CMS database.

If you had BO XI, there is an "Import Wizard" tool that can also handle this sort of thing. But Crystal Server was never designed to have all of the same features as BO XI, so the Import Wizard is not available there.

A computer only does what you actually told it to do - not what you thought you told it to do.

You're missing my point. First, I am not using Infoview. Second. Yes I realize that the CMS database could be backed up and restored. But first off that includes EVERYTHING (folders, users, settings, etc) and secondly in my upgrade from CR XI R1 to R2 we were also migrating from Crystal'
s MSSQL CMS DBS to their new MySQL version (included). And yes, I know the folders CR Enterprise are not related to a physical windows folder structure.

I am only suggesting that it would have been nice if you could export all your folder and reports to a windows folder.

Hi,
Our point is that there are NO folders in BOE itself..what you see is not what you have...

The Reports are already in windows folder ( your INPUT FRS location, as well as wherever they were designed - you did keep the originals, yes?)

The database migration tool can move from MSSQL to MySql, I believe...

I understand what you're saying. I understood that when I made my initial post. You see no value in what I am suggesting. Fair enough for you.

Hi Jdemmi,

First, Hilfy, there IS an Import Wizard in CR Server. Since Crystal Enterprise 8.0, all releases of CR Enterprise, CR Server, BO Enterprise etc have this tool. What did you mean?

Jdemmi, using Import Wizard you can Import from your R1 to R2. In XIr2+ you can also export to an external file called a .BIAR file.

Also, something else you could have done is:
1. Point your new CMS to the R1 DB (or better a copy of it)
2. Point your Input/Output to wherever the files are
3. Use the Update Objects button in the CCM
4. Done!

This is how you do a manual migration without the Import Wizard.

Hope it helps and it's not too late!
