I am retiring soon from a teaching job and would like to export my contacts from Outlook 2003 into my current gmail account. I did a search on this site but did not see a really good answer for my question.

Will I have to abandon my Outlook that I use on my home computer? It currently connects to my school account. Or can I create a new Pop 3 account from somewhere and use it for my Outlook? Now that I have used it for three years, I am really going to miss it. I hate to think that I will be saddled with just an Internet mail account. Can I get an account something like that from Time Warner Road Runner which is my current ISP?

Any ideas? Thanks!

Daniel

For your contacts, on your work computer export your contacts to a CSV file then go into your Gmail contacts, click on Import, browse to the CSV file that you just created, and follow the instructions.

When you get home, open your Gmail account on your home computer, go into your Gmail contacts, click on Export, and export your contacts to a CSV file. Now open Outlook and import the CSV file that you just created.

You can just create new Pop3 account in Outlook on your home computer and Pop your Gmail account into your home computer's Outlook. Instructions, including screenshots, are in the Help section (to the left of the sign out link) of your Gmail account. You'll want to delete your school Pop3 account so that you send/receive doesn't time out trying to connect to it.

Hope this helps.

cmeagan,

Thanks, that did work. Then only thing that did not come through were my groups. All the names in the group came through but not the organizational part of the group.

Gmail is not as group friendly as Outlook, so I am hoping I will still be able to use Outlook in some way after my retirement.

Thanks again.

Your other option, assuming that you use Outlook and can use a thumb drive at work, is to export the contacts to the thumb drive, take it home, and then import the contacts into you home computer's Outlook. That way you bypass Gmail and your groups should stay intact assuming you're using either Outlook 2003 or 2007 at work and at home.

Hope this helps.

cmeagan,

It took just a few minutes to restore my groups and save them. So all in all a pretty good situation.

I was able to set up Outlook to use my gmail account by using the Pop3 method. First time I used Imap, and it worked one time to update the folder. But when I went to send a message - no deal. I looked at some info on Pop3 and decided to go that way. It works great, and the world is good!

Thanks loads.
