I'm designing a book with each chapter in a separate file. The file is setup as reader spreads beginning with a single odd number page and ending with a single even number page. I then combine the files using Indesign's book feature and export the "book" as a pdf. What I expect to see in the pdf is the last page of the chapter 1 file be beside the first page of the chapter 2 file as a spread. Instead, the two pages appear as two single pages. Am I doing something wrong?

No that's exactly right. Acrobat isn't really for reading books as you'd expect to find them read. It just displays one page after the next. It's not really for spreads.

As long as your even numbers are on the left and on the right is odd pages then you're flying (in your InDesign Document that is).

Or if your even folios (numbers) are on the left side of the page and the odd folios are on the right side of the page then you have it spot on.

Thank you for the reply! I will need to talk to my printer about this, but he would like the book in pdf format. I imagine if he wants the pages in printer spreads, I will have to combine all of my separate chapters into one file and use "Print Booklet..." (I can't find this option in the book menu). Is this correct?

The printer will have imposition software for putting the pages in order so they come out in proper sequence when bound.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

...printers spreads are, as jmgalvin states, a concern for prepress in a commercial printer, it will help them if you don't supply printers spreads, only single pages with bleed allowance included...

...printers spreads are dependant on how the book is to be bound together and the size of the press sheet used and how that sheet will be folded...

Just press alt + click on the print menu on your Book Panel. This will bring up the Export Book to PDF option (also available on the fly menu).

As others have mentioned, you need to make your bleeds correct.

So you need to make sure that any images that are touching the edge of the page extend past the page about 3 or 4 mm. Anything else and you're in trouble when the printed is done.

Talking to your printers is an excellent idea. Perhaps they have a prepress department there, that if you send files to, they can alter before sending to press.

Make sure you File>Package your job and send them the entire folder(s).

Yep, got my bleeds 1/8 inch past the page edge except at the gutter or spine edge. I'll talk to the printer after the holidays.

Happy turkey day guys and thanks for the input!

I'm not American. But I think I'll get a big turkey anyway and cook it and eat it.
