I am trying to solve a windows 98 explorer problem. If the system is left undisturbed after approx 10 minutes a pop up alarm warns that "explorer has found a problem writing to specific files, details of which somtimes vary, If i click OK all TSR programmes are shut down. I have tried re installing 98 over itself and have upgraded to 98SE. Also have run Scanreg /restore form the C: prompt I would like to avoid a clean install if possible. If the computer is in constant use the problem does not occur.
can anyone shed any light.

Try this...
Right click My Computer>Properties>Performance>Advanced Settings>File System>Removable Disc...."uncheck" box if checked..click Ok and OK ...
Go back to there again...
Look at Troubleshooting tab....any boxes checked..?
