explorer loses custom settings

i searched and could not find any other posts on this. sorry if it is a repeat.
xp allows you to customize every folder view and save the settings if you have choosen that option. i do and every so often my folders lose my custom settings and i have to go back and reset all the folders the way i like them. i tried searching the registry and looked for some sort of file that holds these setting and could not find anything. anyone out there know where i can find info on this topic please reply
