IE 6.0 , the history has become totally useless.this has been for several weeks but I could not find a reason until yesterday I found someone describing exactly the same problem on the internet. He mentions vscan as the
source of the trouble. apparently vscan created a new directory for temporary internet files, index.dat cookies
etc under the temp directory of the user. This causes the IE 6.0 history to become totally useless

What I see in my directory tree is:

C:\Documents and Settings\Ben\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
THis is as far as I know normal, but I also see this one:

C:\Documents and Settings\Ben\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

And this is not normal.

Can somebody confirm that indeed mcafee is responsible for creating these directories? Are there other people having the same problem?

Thanks

Ben

Hi there, I have had a similar problem with my History since day 1 of XP back in October. I also run Mcafee Virus Scan 6 (updated to 6.2) My problems involves no saved history, either web pages or My Computer. Also my Temporary Internet Folder will every now and then reset its size down to 0mb making working online next to useless. Even more strange I find that I end up with a duplicate history, cookies and temporary internet folder in the Temp folder of Local Settings under my user name. (Not to be confused with the entries under other users such as Administrator or Default Users etc).
Right now this is what I have in my Temp folder at this location......C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME \Local Settings\Temp = Tempoary Internet Files + Cookies + History. Despite the fact these 3 files are already in directories above this Temp folder. History and Temporary Internet Files are in Local Settings and Cookies is in USERNAME with Local Settings.
I have spent much time searching the net for similar problems with no results and was prepared to write it off as just being my computer. In my case whether it is Mcafee, IE6 or XP Home Edition or my system I still don't know. I have done several clean installs but this problem persists. For several short periods I have disabled Mcafee without making any difference. I don't have this problem if I dump XP and reload ME. But due to the lack of information on this problem it is hard to point the blame at XP or IE. It is also hard to consider McAfee for this reason, but I hope one day somebody is able to solve this mystery.
Do you still have the forum details where you read about this problem I'd love to research there too.

Thanks, I'll check them out later. P.S.......I don't like the idea of disabling Internet Filter, sounds worse than the problem itself. I'll do some more digging then start contacting Mcafee. Let you know via here what happens.

Did some checking via those sites and at Mcafee Virus Scan Forum and it appears McAfee are well aware of this problem and are "investigating it". With any luck a patch should be forthcoming for Virus Scan 6 .03, the next update. Thanks for your help on this matter.
