I have a client with SBS 2003 Sp2. When opening my computer explore hangs or stops respondng for a few seconds sometimes up to a minute. When accessing the MDBDATA folder for exchange it hangs for several minutes possible as long as 10 or more. Basically I leave and come back checking occasionally until I get access.

However if I click on start run and type in the path to the folder it opens instantly without hanging until..... I click on any file in the folder. Then I cannot access it for a very long time.

At first I thought it was Trend Antivirus, but the behavior persists even with AV disabled.

The exchange database is 44 gigs.

Any suggestions

update it's been 36 minutes and still no access to the folder.

Well after several hours I killed explorer. I cannot open the folder by any means.

How are you doing your backups?

If you aren't doing proper Exchange backups (and I'm not talking about backing up the MDBData folder), and your MDBData folder has thousands of transaction log files in it, that might explain why Explorer is hanging. Try just getting properties on that folder and seeing how many files are in it. It should be less than 100 if your backups are working properly, since a successful backup will flush all log-based data to the .edb file and delete all the unneeded logs.

Backup work fine. Circular logging is enabled so there is only one log file. I can access the folder from the command prompt, but not by browsing to it.
