I have a Windows 2000 server (fully patched, member of Active Directory Domain) that serves as a print server and a WINS server. When I login to the box using the default admin account and click on the start menu. The box freezes and eventually I control+alt+delete to a screen that says “Explorer.exe.” is not responding. Then I can logout of that account and login under a different account and the box works normally. There are no errors in the error log. No viruses or Trojans. I use the same AD admin account on other boxes with no problem. The problem only occurs on that box logged in as the administrator. What do I do?

log in with another account that has local admin rights. go to the documents and settings folder and rename the folder for the problem user to a backup like user.bak and then relog on as the problem user. It will generate a new profile folder in documents and settings. You'll have to set up printers, email, etc again and you can copy some of the folders like favorites, desktop and my documents back from the backup (do not copy folders that contain local settings) but it should solve your problem with explorer.

Start, Help. You'll be surprised what's there. A+/MCP/MCSE/MCDBA
