I've searched Microsoft's Help and support, but cannot find this particular error message. (I also Googled it and the error Hex did not appear).

Explorer.exe
The instruction at 0x7c9114e referenced memory at 0x00000001. The memory could not be read.

Then after clicking OK, explorer.exe ends, then restarts.

This is not entirely consistant...sometimes it will happen when I attempt to access My Network Places from the Start Menu, sometimes it'll be a Network folder, other times it will be the Network Places link from My Computer screen.

Any ideas? I'm completely up to date for windows Updates...

Do a search on 0x7c - lots of pages (usually memory related).
The common theme seems to be network related. It is Possible that you have a network card problem.
Have you checked the event logs? If it shows the error, posting it here could prove helpful.
Run the ipconfig /all command to see what appears

Anything in the Event Viewer that might help?

Can you reproduce this fault from Safe Mode with Networking, or even in Normal Mode but with a different user?

Keep an eye on this thread too.

The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.

Eventid, and Source from the Event Logs if you could.

If you have an AMD processor:

1.click the Start button at the bottom left of your screen
2.click the Control Panel menu item
3.then double-click the System icon.
4.Click the Advanced tab
5.Find the item marked Performance right under there is a button that says Settings.
6.Click the Data Execution Prevention tab.
7.You'll see two options in that window click the second option that says "Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select."
8. when you are finished with that then click the 'add...' button it should be visable at the bottom of the box. then you have to find where the file 'explorer.exe' resides on your computer most of the time it's something like this c:\windows\explorer.exe anyway add explorer to that list. It'll give you a warning just ignore it and click ok. Then reboot.

There are hundreds of Event 26 entries. The Source in this case is "Application popup" and the KB article you link is not on point.

I'm on Intel P4 Processor.

I did do the steps you mentioned above anyway just to see how it works.

Thanks.

If there's something different with Intel, let me know.

From your first post the mention of "Network" is significant.

This problem may relate to your Network Adapter? If there is both an on-board adapter and an adapter card then disable the on-board one. Ensure the correct and latest driver is installed for any Network Adapter.

Try running ChkDsk to check your drive for errors. Right-click your Drive icon/ Properties/ Tools/ Error Checking. Select both boxes.

Run the System File Checker program from the Run Box by typing.....Sfc /Scannow in it and have your XP CD handy.

If nothing suggested in this thread so far works for you, try repairing windows by running it over itself. You will lose all your windows updates but your files will be untouched.
