explorer.exe constantly crashes

I have tried everything. I re-installed on a new HD with a barebones box and I keep getting the same error "explorer.exe has performed an illegal operation....the program will be terminated" or something similar. Then the desktop disappears and I have to reboot. Sometimes it happens as soon as I boot up but sometimes it won't happen for 15 minutes or so...any idearz???

I have seen this on my machines, but not with that kind of frequency, nor with W2K. Wish I could be more help.
