When I startup windows 98 everything appears to start normal, when it finally gets to the windows screen, I get a blue screen with a pop up box that says explorer has performed an illegal operation and it gives reference to the following file: Shdocvw.dll. in the details. I have tried reinstalling windows.. The computer is an old Compaq 5340 that came with preloaded software.this didn't work. I also tried reinstalling windows from a cd but that didn't work either. I have ran norton from my cd and did an emergency virus scan but it came back with nothing. My daughter was on the last person on the computer and said she got a popup reading, "an attempt to modify explorer has been detected, would you like to accept of keep the old version?" She clicked yes to accept. that's when the probem started. I also tried going back to a previous date on my reg but that didn't work because I tried it after reinstalling windows 98:( Can anyone please help.. I have tons of files on this computer that I don't want to loose them

Thanks in Adv

If it doesn't, you might just format and do a clean installation. You have reinstalled the os twice on top of the existing installation. A format and reinstall will give you a clean installation.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

GO Start > Run SFC

Choose "Extract one file from installation disk."

In the "Specify the system file you would like to restore" box, type;
Shdocvw.dll

Choose Start

Choose the "Restore From" box, Browse to the Win98 Folder on Windows 98 CD (<drive>:\Win98)

In the "Save File In" box, Browse to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
and then click OK.

Click OK and then click Yes to restart the computer.
