I am running windows xp professional. Occassionally when I am in windows explorer, I get an error message and explorer crashes.

explorer.exe - Application error
The instruction at "0x70a7b0f" referenced memory at "0x18c04972". The memory could not be "read".
Click on OK to terminate the program.
Click on CANCEL to debug the program.

Any ideas on what could be causing this? Has anyone seen anything like this before?

Start by eliminating malware as a possible issue:

first try what bcastner suggested, there is a distinct possibility that you are infected...

are you running SP2?

if so type in a command window (Start, Run):

iexplore.exe /rereg

if you are not running SP2, then get a hold of it and install it... this will automatically update your IE...

you may also try in a command window: SFC /SCANNOW

and have the XP Pro CD ready at hand... this will scan for damaged/corrupted systemfiles, and replace them with functioning versions...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...
