explanation of COBOL codes and binaries

Hello,

This is not much of a coding question, but would just like to have a basic understanding of PeopleSoft COBOL.

My basic question is: What is the relation of COBOL binaries (.gnt files) to the COBOLS (.cbl) that exist in PeopleSoft? What is their primary use?
