explaining what a patch panel is

how can i explain what a patch panel is to a non-technical person, in the least confusing way?

Show them a picture from a catalog of a patch panel, and then the patched in switch. If you have a catalog, most vendors have illustrations in the back of how a structured wiring system goes together.
It is only my opinion, based on my experience and education...I am always willing to learn, educate me!
