"If you get into a regular pattern of optimising your pages for the keywords that you want to list high for, then chances are that if you do it correctly, it will work."

So what are the correct methods on how to optimize. You say whatever programs can do, you can also, you just have to know what to do. Well I would like to know what to do.

Could you explain a bunch of methods on how to be able to do this yourself for all your websites, and get them so that they are in the top 20 of search engines.

There is no rush for this, whenever you have the time, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi mate,

Firstly, the reason I do not like these programs is that there is no way that they can do a better job that a human that knows what they are doing..

Also, programs that say "We guarantee you a top 10 position for all of your keywords" are simply lies, there is no way that they can do this, it is not possible. What do they do when 11 people using the same keywords buy the program?? I'll let you think about that one.. [wink]

The best time to do this is before you have the content on your site as it saves a lot of time going through and changing the wording. Whether you already have the site up or not, before you start you should decide what keywords you want to optimise for, use words that are likely to be searched for and ones that are not going to be used by every site on the net.

Lets take the following sentance for example..

Welcome to Tek-Tips forums.

You could change this to:

Welcome to Tek-Tips, a large collection of free technical work forums used by computer professionals to discuss various technical issues.

Both are virtually telling the same thing but in the second you have included keywords that are relevant to the content of your site and it also looks more appealing to a visitor.

The main thing to remember is that you want to keep the visitors after they arrive at your site so do not flood your pages with keywords just for the sake of it, make sure that your site still makes complete sense when you read it.

In your title tag, include the most important keywords and use as many as you can but still keeping it short.

Same goes for your description and keyword meta's. Put the keywords in order of importance, some engines only read a certain amount and then ignore the rest, so do not put the following.

Content="large, free, members, discuss, help, work, computer, forum, technical, tek tips, professional, programming"

A more useful selection would be:

Content="technical, professional, tek tips, programming, forum, work, large, free, members, discuss, help,"

Now, if an engine only reads the first 5 keywords, then it has read the most important ones.

For all 3 (Keywords, desc and title) include your most relevant keywords in all of them as many times as you can but again, do not go overboard as too many in your keywords for example will likely lower your rating without your knowledge.

Just go through your site and work out where you can include more keywords and then make sure you double check that the phrase still makes sense.

Also, use your alt tags and title tags to include keywords, but keep it short. One thing I really despise is a site that when I mouseover an image I get about 300 keywords popping up in the alt tag.. (Very unprofessional)

Another thing that really annoys me is when a site hides loads of keywords in their page.. I came across a site like this the other day in my engine, the webmaster decided to add a lot of hidden text to the page after the site was first reviewed.. That site is now blacklisted and will never be indexed by my engine again..

I don't have much time so I cannot go into any more detail than this just now..

Hope this helps Wullie

WOW. Thanks alot. You should put all of that into a FAQ here, and make it fairly long to cover all the points.

Bascially what you have said is what webposition suggested to me, but they said that certain engines, have the number limits, so what is the highest common number that you should repeat keywords, and in what sections.(Do you know what I mean?)

But thanks though, it is defineately a start down the path of optimizing. And I knew that guaranteeing top 10, is bloody impossible. Even when you do it yourself, there's no guarantee. Think of how many people use the internet. Sites that are in te top 10 are the top 10.

Thanks again, I hope you will get time to eloborate more in the future.

Hi mate,

Just to confuse the situation a little more, take a look at the following..

Go to and search for "survivor chatroom".

#1 is one of my sites. Now take a look at the page.. There are loads of other sites using these keywords and I rank #1 with only a few mentions of the words and the best part is, at present there is not even a chatroom on that site!! Search the same engine for "survivor poems" and #1 again..

For most of my sites,(approx 80%) I have #1 for most, if not all of the phrases that the sites were optimised for, other phrases are ranked #1 as well but that is just an added bonus.

For my web design site, #1 for the first phrase. But, the reason for this is that I targeted a smaller area and aimed to rank for that instead of trying to rank #1 for "website design" as that would be a very difficult task..(Maybe soon[wink])

Hope this helps Wullie

The best money you'll ever spend.

This will help you determine the best keyword phrases which will rank the highest and have the least amount of competition which is critical for crawler sites like Google. However, for directory sites like Yahoo, it's less relavant because your site is examined by a human being and placed accordingly.

Hi mate,

Personally I would have to disagree with that statement..

When you use a program such as that you also have to remember the the same program is used by a lot of others that will likely be targeting the same keywords as you.

The keywords are also those previously used and that is not always an indication of what will be used most in future searches.

Also, that site is a perfect example of going overboard with the ALT tags as I mentioned above. This is just one thing that makes a site looks very cheap..

Hope this helps Wullie
