Hi,

I have tried recertifying a users certificate that has already expired but to no effect. How can i allow this user to connect to the server again using Notes R5.

I was sure that a normal recertification would work.

Any help appreciated

Cheers

Dominik,

Thx for your quick reply.

I recertified the ID housed on the server, as usual. I cannot use the other manual route of requesting as the user no longer has access to the server.

R5 by it's design should compare the server and local ID files and copy/replace accordingly anyway.

Cheers

Hi,

No it does not.
User ID's are NEVER copied or replicated by a server.

If the user is using a user ID on his/her local machine and you re-certified a copy on a server then nothing will happen.

You will then need to find a way to get the re-certified user ID to the user. By filesharing maybe. Keep in mind that the password might be different so tell the user to use their "old password".

After the user overwrites the local ID file it should work.

Dominik,

This is the strange thing. I pointed out that this was how i believed the system worked to our Group Wide Systems Admin at our Head Office.however they told me that th way it works is that it copies/replicates the ID

However you have now once again confirmed my thoughts.

Another point however is that when i have receritified all of the other ID files before letting them expire, they have worked no problem, and that is without using the original id file on the client. so that seems to disprove your argument....I am at a loss of who to believe now ;o)

From the
Make a SAFE copy of the user.id (on his/her PC). Re-certify it on your Admin PC. Return to the user and Merge it. These options are on the users File > Tools > Preferences > More Options > Request Certificate tab.
Hope this helps.

Are you telling me to send the ID file from the client to myself, recertify it, and then send it back.

Obviously this is impossible as the user has no access to the server in order to request a certificate recertification do they?

Thanks anyway

I'm not telling you anything! I copied that directly from a thread at notes.net.

Go to and search for "expired certificate" there are several hundred threads that can give you details on what else to try!

Good luck, I hope you can find some help!

Hi again...

Certification is a troublesome thing in Notes...

1/
When you re-certify a USER then the new certification data is merged into the user his ID on the next logon. This is only in the ID that the user is using at that moment. If he later on logs on using another copy of his user ID then the information will be merged into that ID also.
ID files however do NOT replicate or copy by itself.

2/
If a user can not logon anymore then no merging can occur.
You then need to certify the ID FILE. This causes the data to be merged into that very file that you are certifying.
If you then get the ID file to the user he can log on again using that ID file.

So it is quite simple: certify the ID file and get it to the user somehow (send it to his Hotmail address, copy it over a network share, or let another user log on to the Notes client on that machine and sent it to that one)
