I have two "dead" HDs, and finally got around to examining them.

One is and IDE Seagate ST31720A. Master.
I have check jumpers and also tried on two systems, both on the primary master IDE. The problem is it does not detect the HD. I tried manual settings 3305 Cyl 16 Heads 63 Secs and it does not work. I can hear it whirling. I have tried the figure 8 method also. No avail. No chips to change as they are soldered.

The second is a Quantum 1080E (i think) SCSI HD, connected internally to SCSI card. Again I have tried it on two PCS. The SYMBios boots and when it gets to "starting SCAM protocol" it just hangs. I can here it whirling and starting and stopping but it just does not respond afterwards. Again everything is soldered.

They are old hard disks and backed up so It is not urgent. Just nice if I can recover them and use them again.

I have not taken them apart yet. That is a last resort.

Thanks in advance.

IDE drive has a problem on the controller board. It isn't pumping data out to the IDE channel, but is talking to the HDA.

On the SCSI, does the card have diagnostic capabilities to scan the scsi bus. Sounds like this one is failing to respond to ID request. Once again , a controller problem. You might want to change IDs. Think some Symbios based cards were picky and wanted to ID only 0 or 1 before scanning the rest.
Do you have any other host adapters available? Ed Fair

Any advice I give is my best judgement based on my interpretation of the facts you supply.

Help increase my knowledge by providing some feedback, good or bad, on any advice I have given.

thanks,

FYI, I tried two cards and same result for the SCSI.

I guess with new HD so cheap, these two can go into retirement or the "morgue".

thanks edfair.
