Expansion module firmware

Morning Gents,

I'm on a site that has an IPO 406 V2 on 4.1(9), and has the IPO 500 charcoal grey phone 30 modules, one of which has died and I'm waiting for the replacement to turn up. I expect this will probably be shipped with V8 or V9 firmware. Can anyone remember whether I would have to downgrade the module to match that of the rest of the system, or is the newer firmware backwards compatible?
