Can this be done? It gives me data loss can occur error when trying to do it from windows. Can it be done in a dos or bios mode or booting from the cd or is it more related to windows not recognizing the new array size? It's strange that NT supports it but windows 2000 doesn't.

You're probably using an older version of Array Configuration Utility. The version from SmartStart 5.0 and onwards should work. There was a problem with 4.80 and previous versions when doing a logical drive extension in Win2k, the expansion feature was deactivated in 4.90 until the problem could be fixed.
If you download the latest support pack you should be able to expand/extend your array.
