I have a merlin that Inherited and it is mounted with 1 expansion cabinet beside it and no room left to add another beside it. The only way to expand this system is if I put the new cage above the main one. Is there a way to achieve this with a cable extention, Maybe aftermarket??

Depending on what hardware you have, you could delay the inevitable by using higher density modules instead of lower density ones.

For instance, do away with 008-MLX Modules and replace them with 016's.

But, the installation guide states that you need to leave at least 22 Inches to the right of the first carrier with more room for air flow.

You could sell them another Magix processor/carrier/cards needed for expansion and tie the two systems together with 100DCD modules on each side (using a cross-over cable). A lot more work then a simple expansion, but it would work.

It looks like bad planning on the backboard! If you evaluated what junk is already there, you will probably find stuff that is not-in-service or abandoned. So time to clean up the backboard and reclaim the real estate. If that does work, relocate the whole thing to another wall if available.

Sound like a market opportunity for a cable maker. Thanks Guys. It was the IT people that blocked it off on the board with a rack. All of the system is analog so higher density wouldnt work and its all about the dollar there so I guess were stuck.

Do you mean that all of the extension modules in the carriers are 016 T/R's? I was just wondering how each of the carriers are carded.

Could the phone system be moved to another wall and all cables extended to the existing punch-down blocks?

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.

Run 4 25-pair cables from the backboard to another location with enough space to mount the Magix with its expansion cabinets. Punch on 2 - 66 blocks on each each end. Move the control unit, terminate the stations on the 25-pair cables, cross connect back at the original backboard.

I know what I would do,,,

Stack the processor carrier and any others sideways up the wall, You will need 21 inches for the plaistic and 19 inches for the metal carriers.

However, be careful that the units are adequately ventilating.

They were designed to be mounted the way the story book says to keep them from overheating.

Might work though, especially if you had a small fan to force the issue.

I once consulted on installing one on a Submarine, and the Captain said "My engineer can put and air conditioning vent all over it". Thus it was no big deal.

Vertical mounting probably isn't worth the risk.

Physically moving the system to another wall and using 25 pair cables to extend the demarcs seems like a better approach.

If it ain't broke, I haven't fixed it yet.
