I need to expand a RAID5 array on a DL380 G6 with a Smart Array P410I controller currently with a single array of 3 HDD's, I need to add another drive for capacity on the E$ drive(the array contains a C$ and E$ drive), any advice would be appreciated.
If your array controller has battery (or flash) backed cache, you can just add the drive, expand the array, wait for the rebuild, and then extend the logical drive (E$). And then expand the drive within the OS.
Make sure you have verified backups of your data before attempting this process. Any time you're dealing with the drives, there is a potential for catastrophic failure. Be prepared and hopefully you'll never need to use it.
One other thought, it might be a good time to make sure your firmware and drivers are up-to-date.
There has been a fair amount of discussion on this and related topics. Here are a few:
Soo. How large are the drives now and how large to you wish to grow this puppy?? (physically how many drives do you want to add and logically how large do you want the volume to get??
Beware - C$ might not be able to grow without a rebuild.
Build the boot partition large enough to accomodate applicaitons/swap files
misc stuff. Once you create it, (old school) it's a total tear down to make it larger. Might want to devote basically a drive size to c$. There are many theories about this issue. Look this up.
