Exmerging mailboxes results in bounce backs when replying

As you know, when you use exmerge to export mailboxes from one server, and then use it to import them into another mail server, all the messages that were received on the previous mail server get a bounce back if you do a reply without manually wiping out the to field and repopulating it.

Does there exist any conditions where this is not true, and all replies to old messges work without updating the to field?

You need to research information on LEGACYEXCHANGEDN. You can make the accounts in the new forest match the accounts you just exmerged from. Once that's in order you can do replies in the normal way.
