When exiting word 2003 for one of our users, he gets :

The file is in use by anopther application or user

\\NetworkFileServer01\data$\WINDOWS\TEMPLATE\Normal.doc

When other users login on this machine, there is no problems. It has a TGL plugin - like an addin, but why would this cause grief for him and not others, when they use the same plugin?

\\NetworkFileServer01\data$\WINDOWS\TEMPLATE\

is our campany template location for "workgroup templates"

Why don't you just have the Normal.Doc files on each machine, rather than a network location? I would think that alone would fix the problem.

Another thought:

Is it possible this one user is "opening" the file rather than creating a new document off of the template?

I know that a coworker of mine was "opening" a template as apposed to saving a new file through a rather normal means of opening documents:

She was doing this in Excel, but it probably works the same in Word:

She would open the application, Excel, and then go File-Open to open the template. So, everytime she saved it, she was saving as a template instead of a workbook. I thought I would never figure that one out, it was driving me batty! [smile]

So, unless you've already checked this possibility, give it a look, and let us know.
