I need to make manual changes to some servers and here are my steps:

cd /acct/34537
vi versions.dat

I then go in and make the necessary changes. Here is where I can't figure it out.

I hit 'esc'
Then 'Enter'

but I still cannot type 'wq!'

Can someone help me out. I think I am missing a step.

Thanks

Esc then colon :)), not enter.

Or another short cut is Esc-Z-Z (capital Zs).

Beware, you also need to have write permissions to the file. If you don't you will get a warning when you first try to modify it.
