My mom's friend's house was bought with what is either ISDN or Token Ring networks. I'm not sure exactly how either of these works, which is why I'm here. There are 2 RJ45 jacks in each room, but there is no common wiring point that I know of. I want to know how exactly these types of networks are wired. Particularily, I want to know if I can convert these to standard phone jacks if it has a voice portion on the cable or was strictly wired for data. I know I'm not givin gnearly enough information, and for all I know there could be a patch panel sitting in the crawlspace but from what I know theyre all wired straight to the phone box. Next time I'm over there I will try to trace some of the connections and see how its wired at the box. Until then, anyone have any suggestions or things I should be thinking about?
Thanks

Well, until we know more there's not much we can tell you. Open one of the outlets and find out how they are wired and trace the wires back to their common point. Token ring will have equipment somewhere in the mix so if you find that it will be a start. I've not worked with ISDN so I will defer to those that have.

to convert them to stard phone jacks remove the existing 8 conductor jack and replace them with a 4 conductor

use the white/ blue pair

if they are wired in a loop (what you are reffering to as token ring) tap dialtone into the loop at nay point if it dosnt teminate at the demarck

if they are home run wired you need to find the equipment end and common the pair again adding dailtone in anywhere it is convient

There is no need to replace the jacks.
As log as you know which pair to use they will work just fine for a phone.

ther may be no need to change the jacks but in a residential situation it would look a whole lot better.
