Hi Forum,

I have been practicing a Microsoft SSIS 2005. In the sample data; I got a pckage called 'creatlist'. When I execute the package as per their instructions in the book, It shows red color in the flat file destination folder - employee.csv. It says execution failure with a maximum error count of 2 (usually allowed is 1). Data flow is from OLEDB source- employee query; derived coloumn - full name; sort -department shift employee; flat file destination - shift employee.

I dont think that I need to go to advanced editor of the properties, bcos everything is already worked out by the authors of the book.

Please help me to fix it

is the flatfile in the exact location it is expected to be in?

You don't give us a lot of information about this. One question I have is did you run a provided script to create the package or did you manually create the package? If you manually created the package, maybe you have a typo somewhere.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for your clue. I went to destination source editor and set the location where it needs to be. Execution went OK. When I work with other databases like adventureworks / adventureworksDW, unless we fix the destination, we always see a red cross in the destination component of the package and it will disppear once we set the destination.

But in the samples databases, they call the introductory first package as 'samplesolutions'. They ask us just open the different components and finally execute the package without any manipulation. Here I did not see any cross in the destination component. Yet I could not execute and once I fix that with your advice it went off smoothly. Why I did not see that red cross before I set the destiantion. In the book, also they did not tell me to do this step.

He Bill,

Thanks for your attention. The pacakge I am practicing is smaple database. I just run the provided script and I did not created manually. Your comments are most welcome and most useful for me

Thanks

This may sound bad but I don't put much into the sample solutions that come with books. In the past I have found them to be difficult to work with and sometimes flawed.

As to why the no X on the data connections it could have been a number of things such as turning off the validation settings.

If you are trying to learn SSIS here is some advice.

Rely on a book to teach you what the various tasks do. Rely on performance and various other whitepapers to teach you how the tasks work and when is best to use them. Rely on your knowledge of your enviroment to bring these other 3 pieces into the best workflow for you.

The problem is that the books teach you nice and neatly if you want to bring to data sets together and preform a SQL join type operation then you used a merge join, if you need to lookup a value use the lookup task. The 2 are really interchangable. If done right a Lookup task can be used to quickly do left outer join style operations. Sort where to do it? When? again a little bit a knowledge is huge especially when working with lots of data.
