Exclusive mode problem 1

I've recently inherited an Access Database. It has become more popular than originally expected and they are running into several errors. So I'm looking to migrate the data into MSSQL server and keep the Access front end, but make a few minor adjustments as requested.

However, I can't get it to open in exclusive mode! I've tried to "open exclusive" and it says I don't have permissions. I've tried to change user settings, once again, no permissions. I've had the network admins try with their superior permissions, but still no luck.

There has GOT to be a way for us to get the permissions to get into exclusive mode. I'm not sure who set it up this way (sounds like a few people have had their fingers into it including external contractors), so I don't really have anyone to ask here.

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Are other people trying to get in at the same time?
Ie have you tried taking your own private copy of the front end then opening that (to ensure nobody else is using it simultaneously).

John

Yep. I've got a copy on my local machine. I even made sure no one was in it when I copied it. I'm a little paranoid about messing up their production stuff.

Is this database secured with an Access workgroup (MDW) file?

John

I am unable to find one. Is there any way to find out if I SHOULD have one? It wouldn't surprise me if it got 'misplaced'.

If there isn't a 'nice' way to do it, is there a program someone can recomend to 'fix' it?
I'm starting to think about getting a good Access form to VB project converter. I'm not even 100% certain that will work. I've already determined that I can pull the data out with SQL server, so it's just the forms. But I REALLY don't wanna redo those!

Have you tried importing everything into a new database?

Randy

Sorry it took so long to get back, I'm working on a few projects at once!

I got a different copy of the database that's been upgraded to 2007 and that doesn't have this exact problem. But of course, it has a different one.

We want to migrate the data to MSSQL server and keep the access forms. But when I open the the db, it gives me a security warning about a VBA macro. If I allow the macro to run, it puts the access db into run mode. I can't migrate the data until it's 'trusted' but I can't trust it because it auto runs... I can't find ANY macros (lots of vb code attached to the forms, but no macros), I've even disabled the start up form. I've been looking for a hidden property, but haven't found anything.

Any ideas? or should I start a new topic?

Thanks guys!

Yes... That's when the security warning pops up.

If I don't hold down the shift key, it goes straight to run mode, same as "trusting" the macro.

This is all for Access 03 and I am not sure how familiar with Access you are so...

Well you normally can hold the shift key down, double click the mdb file, continue to hold shift down until you see the database open in design view. Am not familiar with Access 07, it may be different there.

Once you get the db open in design view, to disable the Macro prompt, Go to the Tools Menu > Macro... > Security ... and select Low for security level.

To determine what happens on startup its, Tools Menu > Startup... This should show you what macro / form is displayed on startup.

If none of this works, I would try creating a new empty db and then import every object from the problem db into the new one. File Menu > Get External Data > Import...

The new db format in Access 07 does not support security and does not use mdw files.

I forgot to say. When you open the db while holding down the shift key, and you get the security warning, you need to keep holding shift down when you click on open.

Thanks! Importing the data/forms/stuff to a new file looked like it did it! I'm moving the data now.

For the next noob... The function to import is now under External Data->import->Access.
