exclude an asp.net site

Hi,

I want to create a small asp.net web site and have users link to it from a sharepoint site.

I will host the site on the same server as sharepoint so i guess I need to create a virtual server and exclude this area
from sharepoint

I have read the documentation on how to exclude a vitual server....... but I am having problems actually creating a
virtual server on the same server as my sharepoint 2003 portal server ....

When I create a virtual server and put a default.htm page in it I cant browse to this page ... I just get a 404 error
and as such I cant exclude this virtual server as when I try and 'verify the URL' I get a 404 error.
