For years we have run an inhouse Microsoft post office for internal email. A couple of years ago, all of the associates also started using internet mail through a couple of outside mail servers. We have recently had a number of email virus problems.

I have installed a new exchange server 5.5 with an antivirus plugin, imported the internal post office, and everything works great. Here is the problem:

How do I get exchange server to check the associates outside internet mail (POP3) accounts, and dump their mail into the personal folders so that the virus checker can do it's thing? I know how to configure Exchange to fill POP requests; but I have no Idea how to get it to make POP3 request to outside mail servers.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I didn't think that the server could check external accounts. I believe this would be a function of Outlook itself, not the server. Can someone prove me wrong, please?

If the Outlook Clients have a good AV program like Norton on them, they should have integrated Anti-Virus protection in their mail clients, no?

Another option would be to configure each external account to forward its mail to an account that exists on your Exchange server. I think this would be a better solution.
