A little 9 person company in my town is running MS Server 2003 and Exchange Server 2003. They recently lost their part-time "tech person" and (for a variety of reasons) are unsure if a new backup program they installed is backing up their Exchange Server emails/calendar files.

They can see their application databases and other important files in their backup sets - so their only question relates to Exchange Server files.

Being in a small town, companies try to assist each other out if possible. They asked me if I could help. My dilemma is that while I am familiar with their backup program, I know nothing about Exchange Server. As a result, I have no idea what folders & files I should be looking for in their backup sets.

They are quite sure that the individual who initially set Exchange Server up for them used its default folder & file locations.

Can anyone give me some insight into the folders/files I should be seeing in the backup set?

Thanks!

Best thing to do is to look at the properties of an Exchange database via Exchange System Manager and look for the last backed up date/time.
If it is current then you have Exchange aware backup software, if it isn't then you obviously have a problem.

Unless the backup software came as part of a Small Business type SKU the Exchange agent will usually be separately installable (and payable) from the main backup agent. Although some backup software puts an overall backup agent on and you just license the bits you need.
