We are trying to test backup and recovery for our Exchange 2003 server. So as a test, I go into Backup and restore mode and select our smallest Message store (to make the test as quick as possible). I also select the log files.

I tell it to restore to Microsoft Information Store:\RSG\
on our exchange server (we only have 1 exchange server that holds mailboxes).

I have done this I don't know how many times. Each time I change a few options or something and every time it fails.

it gives this error:

unable to create object for restore: Microsoft Information Store:\RSG\MessageStore4
unable to create object for restore: Microsoft Information Store:\RSG\Log files_1220760007 (BEDS 0x2000FE1B: FS_NO_MORE_DLE)
- Commit is set, but no log files are included in this restore request. Log files are required to perform Exchange database recovery.
- You must restore the logs from the last backup set for Microsoft Information Store:\RSG\ by itself for proper recovery.

But if I try the log files separately, it still gives the same error. What's the deal?

wardog25,

I don’t know much about NetBackup, but had a similar problem with Brightstor.
Have you created the Recovery Storage Group? If no, you need to create one and add the database which you want to restore to the RSG.
In Brightstor when I tried to restore to RSG it failed. However, when I selected “restoring to its original location” it worked.
You cannot restore DB as you would in Exchange 2000, so selecting original location will not overwrite original Database.
Exchange 2003, eve if you select original location will always use RSG.

Regards,

Michael
