We recently upgraded to 8.0; now when the users try to update rates it requires the system password. Even though no password is set in Multicurrency Setup.

I don't want the users to have access to the system password but I do need them to be able to update the rates themselves.

Is there any way to solve this dilema?

It worked fine in 7.5 - as long as I gave the user rights to Multicurrency Exchange Rate Maintenance, they had no problems updating rates.

Any help appreciated.

You can update an exchange rate from the SEtup > Financial > Rate Types on version 7.5 (I think it's Tools > Setup > Financial > Select MC Rate Types on version 8). This does not require the system password and allows the user to update rates for exchange tables that the company has access to.

Tools --> Setup --> Financial -->Rate Types is exactly what I was doing and it requires a password.

In version 7.5 when entering a transaction the user could drill down from the currency field back to MC Exchange Rate Maintenance without a password.

In ver 8.0 it seems that to get to this screen from anywhere you have to enter the system passwordd. I was hoping that there was a flag somewhere that I could turn off to prevent this from happening.

I've not been able to find anything as yet.

I would recommend posting this at:

Then choose the Great Plains newgroups. I have had so many problems on version 8 with their "new and improved" interface that I've decided to not bother upgrading at all. Our security got completely messed up when I upraded and put us back on 7.5. For some reason, they are opening the system wide rate type window from financial instead of the company-only rate type window, as it was in version 7.5.

I just noticed your post there. Do you have access to the newgroup within Customersource? That one is monitored by support technicians at Microsoft (assuming your have correct enhancement).

Yes I posted this issue in the Great Plains customer newsgroup as well.

Hopefully I will hear something from one of the technicians monitoring it.

You can set up a macro for the user that will type in the password without them seeing it.

Thanks!

Then the password is stored in a text file on their machine or a share that they have access to.

Thanks for your responses.

In version 8.0 the security works slightly different than in previous versions; once the user does not have access to the screen the menu option is not displayed.

The system password seems somewhat redundant now. It seems a lot cleaner to just remove the system password knowing that I can control the menu options that the user gets through security.

The user will then be able to enter rates without needing the system password and will not see any other setup options that he/she has no rights to.

Any thoughts on this?
