exchange question with sps2003

hey everyone,

i have just installed sps2003 for my company, i was told by others that i had to be running at least exchange 2000 for sps2003 to work with it to send out e-mail alerts and so on..... is this true, or can i use our current version of exchange (5.5) .... any info on this would be very helpful!!!!

i answered my own question .... for those wondering, you can use any type of smtp server to send out alerts and stuff from sharepoint, but you must be using exchange 2000 or greater for it to truly integrate with exchange (to use the calenders and all that jazz)
