Exchange on two servers

I have 2 servers running ex 5.5. I want one to be the first point of contact for the outside world and the other to contain the databases and stores. How do I set up the first one to just be a "relay"

Tried a few tests for instance on pop3 but just got back the message "mailbox does not exist on this server" as though it is not moving the messages on.
