Is their any way to delete a users mailbox details from within windows 2003 active directory but still keep the user account?

The problem is in Exchange system manager, the user has no mailbox but in active directory, it thinks it does.

This occured because the users account was deleted by accident and when the account was setup again with exactly the same mailbox name, it recreated the user account but conflicted in exchange because the mailbox already existed but was disconnected. I have moved the mailbox to another user but I cant move it back because active directory still beleives that the mailbox exists in exchange.

Thanks for any help!

You need to purge the mailbox from the Exchange store. On the MB store that is hosting the mailbox, right click on the store and choose "run mailbox cleanup". The mailbox will then show a red X marking it as disconnected. Right click on the mailbox and choose purge. If you want to keep the mailbox and assign it back to the newly created user account, then choose reattach instead of purge.
