Exchange is a Database - Right?

I've been out a while... but I recall MS Exchange functions as a database, where if a 5mb attachment is sent to 100 accounts, only one copy of the attachment (5mb) is maintained in the store, each person essentially receives a link to the file, not an actual copy of the file.

Essentially saving space on the server.

Am I correct? Please confirm?

A single copy is kept for users in each mailbox store. If the attachement is sent to 50 users, and those users are split amongst 2 stores, then 2 copies will be stored. The benefits of SIS have been downplayed in the last couple of years, and will be even more so in the future.
