Running Exchange 2003 in root domain, and have users in child domain with mailboxes on this Exchange server. Recently replaced the FSMO role holder DC in child domain. I think this issue is related to the replacement of that DC.

Today I go to check properties of a user account from a root domain DC, and I get an error:

The operation failed.

ID no:800004005

Microsoft Active Directory - Exchange Extension

I cannot view any Exchange attributes for any user accounts in the child domain any more...either from a child DC or from a root DC. Any ideas?

Thanks!

You may need to re-run the forest & domain prep processes from the installation set as the schema may be incomplete.

Resolved.

It was a combination of a DNS issue and Recipient Update Services.

The Root Exchange Server did not have the suffix list for the Child domain, so it wasn't resolving short names for Child servers.

The RUS needed to be changed to point at the new Child DC.

I hope this post can help someone else in the future...
