Exchange email queues occasionally stop processing outgoing email

Environment
Exchange email server 2003 sp2 (VMware Virtual Machine)
Novell connector for GroupWise and Exchange (VMware Virtual Machine)
GroupWise 7.1 (Novell Netware physical machine in a three-node cluster)

The Exchange email queues occasionally stop processing outgoing email for 5 to 6 hours.
During this time, incoming email is received.

Email sent to GroupWise system over the connector is received.

Cannot ping from this server to outside mail domains. yahoo.com; hotmail.com, gmail.com, etc.
Can do a ns lookup to those email domains from this server.

The event viewer shows no errors.

The cpu usage is low.

Server has been rebooted.

The mail queues begin sending messages out after 5 or 6 hours.

What do the SMTP logs say? Is it even attempting to send out?
