I have two Exchange 2000 SP3 Servers.

I recently (About two months ago) created a second Exchange server and moved all the mailboxes over to the new server. This new server has been working fine since.

Last night, the old Exchange Server - which has no real function, but still exists in Exchange System manager - blue-screened.

I couldn't access email on the new server until I fixed the original server problem.

Can I simply remove the old server from Exchange System Manager?

Thanks..

Thanks - should the original Exchange server being unavailable affect access to mail on the new Exchange server?

If it's still being relayed through the old one, yes.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

No, nothing being relayed through the old server.

Same thing happened this morning - the old Exchange Server (which was also a DC, which I removed from it's FSMO roles yesterday) was on the network, but I couldnt login via rdp or PC anywhere.

I couldnt open outlook on any clients, even though all of the Exchange services were started on the new Exchange server.

I'm also getting these errors in the event log on the new Exchange box:

"The user account for 'User X' does not exist in the directory or is not enabled for Exchange mail. This mailbox will be removed from mailbox store 'First Storage Group/Mailbox Store (NEWEXCHANGE)' in 30 days"

"Metabase Update agent failed to start. Error code is 80040a01.
The Metabase Update service failed to start, error '80040a01'"

Numerous reboots of both Exchange boxes resolves the problem temporarily.

How can I check of mail is relayed through the old Exchange box?

This isn't related to SMTP relaying.

There may be two different issues - hard to tell.

Do you have a Global Catalog in the domain, aside from the old Exchange server?

To check, go to the 'DSAccess' of the new server, and ensure that a GC is listed there and is online.

There are several KBs for the metabase update error - see if the full symptom list matches your situation:
