I was told about this this afternoon and i had to test it on my 2007 exchange (stan). I created a mailbox for a account i was going to remove from my AD in the near future, it gave the user a email address as normal and created a mail box.

I then proceed to remove the mail box for that account after a warning that the mailbox was about to be removed i ok'd it. At the time i had AD users and comps open, the account was still there so i thought that it must just be happening on this guys setup. I closed AD and reopened it and as told the account has been deleted from AD..

Has anyone come across this? Is there info published on it?

many thanks

Actually, the warning read something to the affect that the account was going to be deleted, not the mailbox. This is by design.

I'm Certifiable, not cert-ified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

There are no more PDC's! There are DC's with FSMO roles!

let me check...brb with warning!

thanks for your quick reply

ok i was not expecting you to say "This is by design"

The warning i get before deletion is as follows:

Removing the mail box will remove windows user object and mark the mail box in the data base for removal.
Are you sure you want to remove ***.***?

you answer seems to totally correct thankyou.. now i need if you can to explain why this happens if you can because it affects my whole policy at school when i create a mail box and then delete them after they have finished the subject over a 2-3 month period

As i see it i will have to disable mailbox until that child leaves the school or im going to have missing accounts.

That's the way it was designed to work. The option you want is DISABLE, which removes the mailbox but leaves the user account.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

Thanks Pat & Dave

Think that in the next design they might give us the option of all three disable, delete & delete with AD account ,but certainly gone a little back wards on those settings..

In the olden days it was this way then we moved to Exchange managing itself and you could remove mailbox without deleting AD object. Now with 2007 Exchange can access AD and remove the user.

You can't make everyone happy!

Many people have fallen for this - you aren't the first and won't be the last.
