Are all services running? If they are then I believe the problem could possibly hardware related.
I have seen that type of error that was related to hardware failure in both SQL and Exchange clusters. Typically it ended up being bad fiber/GBIC/fibre conroller cards or any combination of the components making up the back end of your cluster. My errors were somewhat random and not easy to narrow down, especially in a production environment. The polling errors are usually not software related. It is a communication problem, typically.

If you have any spare gear, I would start by narrowing down the possible culprits systematically.

Your pub is not mounted.

allthe services are running. We had a problem before stemming from an I/O error. the Trans log files got corrupted due to this. We restored the DB's from a back up. Thanks for the info.

If the IS is running and the pub is not mounted on a cluster, you get that error. You also get it, among others, if you start the IS with a new bblank database.
