Hi,
I use ARCserve 6.61 Advanced with its Exchange Agent on Exchange 5.5 SP3. I also use McAfee Netshield/Groupshield to protect the mailboxes and servers..

I've been told that there was problems using Groupshield
with Arcserve, but I couldn't find any doc on McAfee or CA websites. I often get E8602 errors while backing up the Brick Lvl. It seems that the attachments get corrupted, as cleaning them fixes the problem. ESEUTIL doesn't find any error.

Do you know where I can find a doc where this problem is discussed? Or can you give me a workaround?

Thanks for your help

Our backups hang sometimes but I'm not sure if this is the cause. If you are concerned, you can stop/start the Groupshield services as a pre/post job remembering to schedule an on-demand scan afterwards just in case. This info is on McAfee site on the Groupshield Knowledge Base , but you need a password to get in (consult your support rep).

Hope this points you in the right direction.

Arcserve uses a backup agent mailbox to pass all the info of the store/mailboxes through to the backup server. McCrappy Groupshield is going to scan on every mailbox access. So the two are fighting each other and you may often get "read/write error in names pipes" backing up mailboxes.

This esp became a problem with groupshield 4.5 because it uses the new and different MS API which has a different hook into the OS than the older NA GS for Ex.

The problem then is made worse on servers with many mailboxes. It can also become more of a problem if the admin forgets to reschedule IS maintainence for after the backups are finished.

The resolution is that you have two pieces of crapware instead of one, both fighting each other. What we had to do at my company is to remove the Groupshield for other AV software as we had untold thousands of $$$ into Arcserve, SAN, etc. It was just too costly for us to ditch Arcserve (my most sincere wish), so we got rid of McCrappy instead.

And if you haven't shelled out for support yet for McCrappy, they of course do not offer per-incedent support. Considering my user count is in the 251-500 range in their eyes for a support contract (which I've never had to use in the past, ever), I would have had to pay like $5000 just to get this one issue solved. I told their service rep how unhappy I was about their polices at NA and told him I was ditching it for this reason. They said "good luck". Jerks.

So Groupshield is no more on our servers. It wasn't worth the outrageous costs associated with it. And if you're stuck with Arcserve like i am, consider switching too.

Hi, thanks for your reply, this is just what I suspected and expected too (because AS is expensive, huh!). I'll erase this crap (I mean Groupshield) ASAP.

Thanks a lot

I did the same thing mate - think there may be a post on it somewhere. Couldn't get the two to agree so I ditched plopshield and put on inoculan. Inoculan isn;t actually anywhere near as good as the McAff stuff, but it's something and as it's made by ca, surprisingly it doesn't conflict!

I preferr Norton Coporate Edition 7.51. I could be wrong but what I see happening is that the attachment files get moved through the temp folder and Norton seems to clean/quarintine from there. They might also have a seperate exchange virus agent.

NavCe is great cause of its cool system console and ability to get status and control all managed clients and servers. Updates are done over the wire without seperate download servers or login script avupdates.

Peteski, your language is really unprofessional, can you cut that out, thanks :)
