Hello

Can anyone tell me how to do a backup of Exchange using the Open Files agent? What I need is a full backup of the server for use with the Disaster Recovery Option, but even with the Open Files Agent I get a sharing violation on priv1.stm and pub1.stm and it doesn't even bother trying to back up the exchange edb files!

ArcServe (v11.1) is running on the same server as the Exchange 2003 server under Windows 2003. I have tried changing the timings for the Open Files agent and it makes no difference. I noticed someone on these forums mentioned a registry key to change for version 9 but I cannot find it in the installation of version 11.1

Thanks

It will work with V9. I do both the open files backup and the store backup. Please be aware that on occassion the open files backup does not work and I have had to do the full store restore.

Here were the instructions for V9:

Use the Registry Editor and go to the Client Agent key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Computer Associates\BrightStor ARCserve Backup.
In the client agent parameters there is a DWord value called SkipDSAFiles. This is set to 1 (skip files) by default. Set this value to 0 and ARcserve will backup the Exchange files.

If you give this a try on V11, I'll be interested to know if it works or not, so please post again.
Good luck!

Thanks Debi.

Nope, the registry key doesn't exist on v11.1 - I tried adding it but it made no difference.

Spoke to technical support, they say it can't be done and the only way to do a flat backup of Exchange is to stop the services. There are also a couple of other files that the Open Files Agent does not work on so I don't think I'll bother with buying it (we have it on trial at the moment).

The Exchange Agent backup will not restore the Exchange databases during a Disaster Recovery so it also means lost time having to restore Exchange after the system is back up (and also adds more extra steps to the process).

Not sure what I can do now really, any suggestions?
