Exchange backup with Backup Exec 1

Hi guys..

I am using Backup Exec with the Exchange Agent to back up my Exchange server. I noticed that there are some files in the Exchange directory that are being skipped and I want to make sure that either they dont need to be backed up or that they are backup when the "Information Store" is backed up.

Here are the files:
The item \exchsrvr\DSADATA\DIR.EDB in use - skipped.
The item \exchsrvr\DSADATA\edb.log in use - skipped.
The item \exchsrvr\DSADATA\temp.edb in use - skipped.
The item \exchsrvr\imcdata\queue.dat in use - skipped.
The item \exchsrvr\Mdbdata\tmp.edb in use - skipped.

The rest of the back up is succesfull, including the Information Store, Exchange Directory and Mailboxes.

Any advise would be appreciated.

Well ours doesn't skip any files but we use the open agent so it backs them up anyways

those are live data files you have to use the Veritas open file agent to back those up before i used to have the agent i just unchecked then in my backups and then i did a restore with those files unched and it restored fine.

what ver are you running?

Well, I am running 7.2 or 7.3 with the Exchange Agent. I thought maybe it was a problem with my version so I loaded teh trial version of 8.6. Those files are skipped by both versions of back up exec.

The 'skipped' files as you say are not crucial, file use in order from Mungorocks.

DSADATA\temp.edb is the temporary file created while the directory store (dir.edb) is being defragged online

imcdata\queue.dat is the messages waiting (or processing) by the Internet Mail Connector

Mdbdata\tmp.edb is another temporary defrag file this time for the IS

There is every chance that these files would be incomplete if backed up so a restore of these could cause more problems than it would solve.

Those files are the live Exchange server files and should NOT be backed up.

Choose to leave those files off the back up and use the Exchange server agent to back up the database.
